NHMRC: Development Grants – Funding Commencing in 2021

The Development Grants scheme supports the commercial development of a product, process, procedure or service that, if applied, would result in improved health care, disease prevention or provide health cost savings.

Research supported by this scheme must, via a commercial business plan, have detailed feasible strategies for commercialisation that takes into account the regulatory pathway, protectable intellectual property, commercial barriers and potential routes to market.

The Development Grants scheme will not fund early stage research or knowledge creation research (this is fundable instead through the Ideas Grant scheme).

Funding & Duration

From an estimated pool of $15 million, the NHMRC Development Grant scheme provides funding for projects of 1 to 3 years duration.

There is no limit to the budget request; however, successful Development Grants commencing in 2020 received funding between $400,000 – $1.1M.

Submission Requirements & Due Date

  • Applications must be submitted to Research Services for internal review by 27 November 2019.
  • Final applications must be submitted to NHMRC via Sapphire by 11 December 2019.
  • Please email if you are considering applying for this scheme.

Please note: this is the first NHMRC scheme to require applications to be made using their new grant management system, Sapphire. After registering online you will be sent an email that will enable you to log-in and access your account.
