US Department of Defense: Anticipated Funding Opportunities for Financial Year 2022

The US Department of Defense have released funding pre-announcements for the following programs to allow investigators time to plan and develop applications.

Prostate Cancer Research Program (PCRP)

The PCRP is interested in supporting research that addresses specific gaps in prostate cancer research and clinical care; therefore, applications are required to address one or more of the following FY22 PCRP Overarching Challenges:

  • Improve quality of life to enhance outcomes and overall health and wellness for those impacted by prostate cancer
  • Develop treatments that improve outcomes for men with lethal prostate cancer
  • Advance health equity and reduce disparities in prostate cancer
  • Define the biology of prostate cancer progression to lethal prostate cancer to reduce death

Pancreatic Cancer Research Program (PCARP)

Applications submitted to the FY22 PCARP must address one or more of the following Focus Areas:

  • Early detection research for pancreatic cancer, including the prevalence in individuals with pre-diabetes and diabetes and/or those in underserved ethnic and minority communities
  • Supportive care interventions, patient-reported outcomes, quality of life, and perspectives during treatment and survivorship
  • Understanding the relationship between metabolic disruptions in pancreatic cancer and their systemic effects, including diabetes and cachexia
  • Understanding precursors, origins, and early progression of pancreatic cancer
  • Understanding the events that promote pancreatic cancer metastasis
  • Understanding the relationship between oncogenic signaling and the tumor microenvironment that drives drug resistance and therapeutic response
  • New drug development targeted toward cancer sensitivity and resistance mechanisms including immune mechanisms of resistance

Joint Warfighter Medical Research Program (JWMRP)

The mission of the JWMRP is to accelerate research and development projects that have the potential to close high-priority DOD medical requirements and capability gaps. Within this context, the JWMRP is interested in supporting research and development efforts that address overarching and Service-specific priorities; therefore, applications are required to address one or more of the following FY22 JWMRP Focus Areas:

  • Endemic and Emerging Disease Threats
  • Operational Medicine and readiness
  • Evironmental Medicine
  • Combat Casuality Care

Chronic Pain Management Research Program (CPMRP)

For this program, chronic pain is defined as a pain that occurs on at least half the days for 6 months or more, and which can be caused by issues including, but not limited to:  combat- and training-related physical or mental stress and trauma, migraines and chronic headaches, traumatic brain injury, arthritis, muscular-skeletal conditions, neurological disease, tick and vector-borne disease, other insect-transmitted or tropical disease, and cancer.

Focus areas for each award mechanism

Each award must address at least one of the Focus Areas listed.

  • Clinical Exploration Award
    • Chronification of pain
    • Effectiveness or observational studies of novel treatments or untested techniques/approaches/pathways to chronic pain management
  • Investigator-Initiated Research Award
    • Chronification of pain
    • Development of non-opioid therapies and methods for the treatment of chronic pain
    • Effectiveness or observational studies of novel treatments or untested techniques/approaches/pathways to chronic pain management
  • Translational Research Award
    • Comparative effectiveness studies (for evidence-based, efficacious interventions to manage or prevent chronic pain)
    • Implementation science (for evidence-based, efficacious interventions to manage or prevent chronic pain)
    • Observational studies related to chronic pain

Multiple Sclerosis Research Program (MSRP)

Funding for the Multiple Sclerosis Research Program (MSRP) supports innovative and impactful research that addresses fundamental issues and gaps in Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
