Accessing The University of Adelaide Accelerated Headstart Program at USC

The University of Adelaide’s Headstart scholarship program gives highly motivated students the opportunity to pursue tertiary studies while completing their SACE, with grades achieved counting towards their SACE and ATAR.  Under this program, students undertake university subjects and subsequently, if they enrol in a relevant course at the University, will be given credit towards their degree.

Each year a select few of University Senior College (USC) students are accepted into the program, students attending USC have the benefit of already being on the North Terrace Campus precinct in addition to the flexible USC timetable, operating on the same plan as The University of Adelaide’s timetable. Currently, we have students undertaking study of first year Mathematics and Biology.

Students who may have been accelerated in their previous schools may be able to undertake study at the Year 12 level while in Year 11. For example, a number of students have taken Mathematical Studies and Specialist Mathematics during their Year 11.

Further information is available via the Headstart 2015 Brochure,

Mentoring Headstart Students

Each Headstart student will be mentored by USC’s Director of Teaching and Leaning, Kate Cutts. Kate’s role is to monitor student progress and act as a contact linking the University, the student and USC.

The University of Adelaide also provides ongoing coordination and support including:

  • liaison between the University and Headstart students, their parents/ guardians, principals and mentor
  • tracking students’ progress through their university studies
  • organising academic and peer support for students.

Successful applicants receive a full scholarship from the University of Adelaide, which waives both the tuition fees and the Student Services and Amenities fee for any courses studied as part of the Headstart program.

Costs associated with textbooks, materials, equipment, field trips and travel to and from campus are the responsibility of the student.
