Children’s University Volunteer Award presented to USC students

Congratulations to USC Year 12 students Gillian and Mateusz who are the first University Senior College students to graduate from the volunteer program run by the Children’s University Australia. Both Gillian and Mateusz completed over 30 hours and each received a ‘Children’s University Volunteer Award’.

Children’s University Australia is an international partner of Children’s University Trust (UK) and managed by the University of Adelaide, South Australia.  The Children’s University concept is relatively simple: it offers superior educational experiences for children aged between 7 and 14 years and volunteering opportunities for 15-18 year olds outside of school and recognises their achievements through the award of formal certificates and graduations. The model leverages local educational and learning activity providers (including sports clubs, museums, galleries, school clubs) and has a strong emphasis on experience as a significant learning tool, acknowledging the value of the range of different learning experiences and environments in which children engage. All learning activities must have a link in some way to a university course eg. Football club = sports engineering, physiotherapy, management, teaching, sciences etc.

Children’s University Australia (CUA) offers a Passport to Volunteering for 15 – 18 year olds which is a great way for older students to still be involved in CUA. Volunteers are involved in running clubs at schools, assisting with CUA graduations and providing positive role models for younger children.

The 2016 Graduation Ceremony was held on Tuesday 20th September at Bonython Hall, the University of Adelaide with awards presented by Professor Warren Bebbington, Vice-Chancellor and President, The University of Adelaide and Professor Phillipa Levy, Pro Vice-Chancellor – Student Learning, The University of Adelaide.
