University Senior College (USC) student, Sonny Tran is one of 2016’s high achievers, receiving the highest possible ATAR score of 99.95. Sonny received subject merits for Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Research Project B plus an A grade for English Communications. Sonny came to University Senior College in year 11 to complete his SACE, but he had already received A+ grades for Maths Studies and Specialist Maths whilst studying these year 12 subjects in year 10. Subject merits are awarded to students who gain an overall grade of A+ for a subject; less than 1% of the subject cohort, score a merit.
Via the University Senior College Partner’s Pathway program with the University of Adelaide, Sonny has already been accepted into the Health & Medical Sciences (Advanced) Degree at the University of Adelaide. However he is still keeping his options open and may pursue his studies in medicine at Flinders University or sit the UMAT examination next year and apply to gain a direct entry into a Bachelor of Medicine at the University of Adelaide. Currently his options are wide open and he looking forward to the opportunities that lay before him.
When asked how he coped with the workload; Sonny said “I didn’t find it stressful, I kept everything steady and ensured I made a schedule and stayed focussed with each of my subjects”. His advice for students studying year 12 in the future is “Seek out teachers and use their availability time to help with your draft work. Stay focussed on all tasks and don’t neglect any subject, treat them equally”
USC Principal Bob Holloway said “Sonny has had an outstanding time at University Senior College. He has engaged in every aspect of our transition pathway and flourished in a learning environment where he has been able to connect and collaborate with like-minded students”.
Before commencing his studies at university in 2017, Sonny plans to return to his home in Danang, Vietnam to visit relatives and friends. He hasn’t been back since 2008 so he is looking forward to his well earned holiday.
A total of 10 students from University Senior College secured an ATAR over 99 placing them in the top 1% in the state, 36 students above 95 and 73 students were placed in the top 10% securing an ATAR above 90. A detailed list of the successful 2016 academic results is available on the USC website.
