Book Review: Dune
I recently decided to tackle the 1965 novel Dune by Frank Herbert, one of the most famous science fiction novels of all time. It is a novel I have picked up and put down countless times before, daunted by its length. This time I was determined to read all 464 pages.
A Hesitant Return (To Watching Doctor Who)
One of my absolute favourite TV shows is Doctor Who, and the other day I rewatched one of my favourite episodes—’A Christmas Carol’ (the Christmas special from between Seasons 5 and 6).

Review – Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
Solo: A Star Wars Story was always going to be a film with a tricky reputation. Beyond the behind the scenes drama and the change in directors (necessitating reshoots of most of the film), Solo had to justify its own existence. Star Wars fans who read the books and comics are well-accustomed to prequels and side-stories about characters […]
Review – Dark (2017- )
With all the new releases on Netflix these days, its easy to miss the gems, especially given how much trash Netflix is happy to put up on their platform bearing their name. But late last year gave us Netflix’s first German-language production—the moody and nihilistic Dark. When it was released, Dark drew a lot of comparisons to Netflix’s […]
Review – Star Trek: Discovery (2017- )
Much of the discussion after Star Trek: Discovery began airing late last year was about expectations. The first new Star Trek show since 2005, early previews were met with scepticism because Discovery was changing things from the previous series. If it’s a prequel, why do the Klingons look different? Why are the colours not as […]

Review – Capsule Reviews from 2017
As we say goodbye to 2017—and What Messes With Your Head? prepares to go on hiatus until February—I thought it would be appropriate to give some quick capsule reviews of media I’ve watched this year that might warrant mentioning. No rhyme or reason, let’s just go go go!
Review – Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
Ridley Scott’s 1982 film Blade Runner may not have been a hit when it was first released, but few science-fiction films have reached its cult classic status, at least, not with its philosophical and thematic weight. It’s a cult classic status that’s deserved, even if the original isn’t perfect, and while Blade Runner 2049 isn’t quite perfect either, it’s […]
Review – OtherLife (2017)
In a time where we have such ready access to the Internet, it’s easy to go months and even years without consuming Australian-made content. With so much premium content at our fingertips from Britain, the USA, and beyond, where do you find the time to watch anything Aussie-made that isn’t a news show or on the […]

Review – Empires of Eve (2015)
Eve Online is a space opera MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online Game) that has been running since 2004, a relatively niche game that still occasionally makes headlines when wars break out into enormous space battles between hundreds of players. But Eve Online is fascinating not just for its space battles, but two other reasons: the fact […]

Review – Saga, Vol. 1 (2012)
One of the most successful independent comics of the last five years (that doesn’t have a TV show), Saga is often touted as one’s entry point into the galaxy of comics that aren’t Marvel or DC superheroes. And while the subject matter might give one pause before suggesting Saga to literally anybody, this is still a fantastically creative […]
