Living with Stress

When I submitted my last assignment and sat my last exam a few weeks ago, I naively assumed that my life would suddenly be free from stress. This is sometimes what we to tell ourselves just to get through: that if we study just a little bit longer, if we write just one more paragraph […]

Defeating Writing Distractions

PhD students have quite a bit more flexibility in their working day. Sometimes, too much flexibility. What makes it worse is that there are so many sources of distraction around me. I easily use it as an excuse to delay writing my thesis chapters. There’s making sure I am on top of current events and […]

Trying to Get Creative in my Work as a PhD Student

I don’t consider myself a very creative person. I used to think creativity didn’t really factor into my PhD journey. I’ve recently realised how untrue that is. In fact, one of the things I’ve learned is the need to be flexible and adaptable. At some point in my early career researcher life, it was necessary […]

Struggling With Sleep

I have always had trouble falling asleep. As a little kid, I was scared of pretty much everything, but most notably the dark. I couldn’t sleep without the hall light on, and even today I prefer to fall asleep with some background noise and a little bit of light coming through the window.

The Small Things

Recently, I’ve been making more of an effort to enjoy the small things. Maybe it’s that summer is approaching and the air is warmer, or maybe it’s that I’m feeling nostalgic now that my time at university is almost over. Either way, I’m finding that I’m more purposeful in my actions

Supporting An Anxious Friend

I have suffered with anxiety my entire life. The thing is, I was only diagnosed with anxiety this year after it left me bed ridden. I tried to ignore my pounding heart and sweaty brow on a winter’s day for so long that eventually it caught up with me. I always hid my identity with […]

Eco-Cleaning: Bicarb Soda and Vinegar

Two of my favourite cleaning products are bicarb soda (baking soda) and vinegar. Along with a few drops of essential oils, there is nothing they can’t clean. Bicarb soda is a mild abrasive that is suitable for cleaning a variety of surfaces. It is also food safe, making it an ideal product to use when […]
