Exploiting context in large-scale image-based classification problems
Australian Centre for Visual Technologies
University of Adelaide, Australia
Duration: 2 years
The Australian Centre for Visual Technologies (ACVT) is one of the largest computer vision and machine learning research groups in Australia. Based in Adelaide, we currently number over 40 members including academics, research staff and students. We work on a mixture of fundamental and commercially oriented research projects in computer vision and machine learning, and we have a strong track record of publications in the top venues.
The ACVT has recently secured funding to develop novel approaches to identifying objects in images. More specifically, we are interested in new approaches that might leverage contextual information and that are able to learn from, and be applied to, the large numbers of images which are currently available for a wide variety of problems. The research to be carried out has a range of potential applications, some of which will be investigated over the course of the project, but the generation and publication of high quality research is the top priority.
The project is run by Professor Anton van den Hengel and Associate Professor Chunhua Shen, and will provide opportunities for joint supervision of postgraduate and honours level students, collaboration within the Centre, and with visitors and with international partners.
Each successful applicant must have:
– a PhD in a relevant discipline
– a background in computer vision, machine learning, or both
– experience in C++, Python and/or Matlab
– a good publication record commensurate with experience
– fluency in written and spoken English
– the ability to work individually and as a member of a broader team
Salary: University Level B (AU$83,620 – 93,027 depending on qualifications), plus benefits. Funding for relocation and conference travel is available.
The closing date for applications is 11:59 PM Wednesday 18 December, 2013, Australian Central Standard Time (UTC+9.30). Please be sure to include in your application a full CV (including a publication list and statement of research expertise and interests) and the names of two referees.
